TAA Executive Board Statement in Support of UNM’s Unionizing Efforts

Supporting University of New Mexico Graduate Workers
February 14, 2021

We are dismayed by University of New Mexico administrators’ recent legal actions aiming to bar graduate student workers of their right to organize. Graduate students are employees of a university who perform many of the duties essential to fulfilling its mission as an institution for teaching, research, and service. Graduate workers often face precarious working conditions due to overwork, low pay, and job insecurity. The pandemic has only exacerbated those circumstances as we have seen increases in teaching workloads due to the challenges of new course modalities as well as the added emotional labor of trying to support students through trauma.

A majority of UNM graduate workers have decided to join their union, and the university needs to keep their promise and abide by the law to respect the rights of workers to collectively bargain. We call upon the university to recognize UNM United Graduate Workers as the union for graduate student employees.

Signed,
The TAA Executive Board
