TAA Signs Petition Urging AFT to Disaffiliate From Cop Unions
The TAA signed the “Call on the AFT to Disaffiliate From Cop Unions” petition, written by members of two AFT caucuses: RAFT at Temple University and RAFA at City University of New York. The petition “demand[s] that organized labor cease its collaboration with, and support for, the repressive state apparatus in the form of police unions whose very role it is to squash the struggles of workers and the oppressed. We want our unions to stand strong against the bosses as well as combat racism and all state and structural violence. A crucial requirement of this commitment is to sever all connections with police locals.” In addition, the petition “urge[s] the AFT to support the growing worker and student movement to get police in their various forms off campus and end all collaboration with institutions of organized violence, including local and state police forces, DHS, FBI, and ICE.”
The TAA Resolution Demanding Cops Out of AFL-CIO from July 2020 empowers the Executive Board to sign this petition as the TAA, specifically the clause that reads: “Resolved that we call on AFL-CIO affiliates with partial law enforcement membership to permanently terminate their relationships with police, correctional officers, and other law enforcement.”
We call on each member to read and sign the full petition here.
