Get Involved in the Fight to Take Back Wisconsin
There are many ways to get involved this summer in efforts to maintain our union and fight back against Walker’s attacks on public sector workers and the people of Wisconsin.
Stop the Walker Budget
The more Walker’s budget develops, the more we see how damaging it is. The budget will cut some $250 million from the UW System, $125 million alone from UW-Madison, make cuts to K-12 education, slash Medicare and BadgerCare, all while giving tax breaks to corporations and the wealthy. The collective bargaining provisions in the Budget Repair Bill may also be inserted into the budget, bypassing Judge Sumi’s injunction on the bill.. Not angry enough? The budget also has provisions that will make it harder for small craft breweries to do business.
But we’re fighting back along with thousands of Wisconsinites, and you can get involved as soon as today.
JUNE 4
WALKERVILLE: The Hoovervilles of the Great Depression were marks of the failed policies of unregulated speculation which helped lead to the collapse of financial markets. The establishment of a Walkerville marks the failure of a budget to provide for its citizens and for the state. This “tent city” will last as long as it takes for the legislature to go through this budget process. The kickoff will be at 7 PM on the Capitol Square.
JUNE 6
March Against the Budget: Join Firefighters, Nurses, Community, Farmers and Tractors to STOP the budget. A march will start from Fire Station 1 (316 W. Dayton) at 11:30 AM and head to the Walkerville Tent City. The event will last throughout the day, so you can come doing lunch and after work.
Organize Your Union
Our efforts to organize our union are ongoing and we need your help to stay vibrant, active, and salient. This means that you need to get involved in your department and across campus. We are working towards orientation this fall and reforming a diversity committee. If you want to give involved in any of these activities, email Katie Lindstrom and Jason Orne.
Membership Retreat
We will be having a membership retreat next Saturday, June 11 at a time and place TBD. At this retreat we will talk about the direction of our union, our priorities for the coming year, and how we can be a more inclusive and representative organization. All members are encouraged to attend and invite people from your departments.
Sign up for the retreat here.
Recall Elections
Six Republican senators are up for recall elections, which are to be held on July 12. Winning in these elections would turn the Senate and be the first step in recalling Walker. We need you to volunteer. Members will be making phone calls to voters, and taking field trips into the recall districts to knock on doors and get the word out. The whole country is watching these elections, so we need everyone to pitch in to make sure we win.
Please come help us phonebank this week — Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday night from 4-9 PM. Sign up for a shift with Mike Amato, call 617-538-7270, or just drop by the office off State St., at 254 W. Gilman.
The July 12 election is only a few short weeks away, so don’t wait to get involved. This election is critical for achieving a legislature that is supportive of students and public sector workers in Wisconsin.
