The State Superintendent of the Department of Public Instruction is a democratically-elected position in Wisconsin.

What is the State Superintendent?

The State Superintendent of DPI:

  • Manages the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction
  • Oversees public schools and libraries
  • Seeks and promotes ways to improve schools
  • Evaluates performance of schools
  • Serves four-year terms with no limit on terms
  • Serves on the UW System Board of Regents

Superintendent Election

Candidates for this position will appear on the Spring 2021 ballots:

  • Spring Primary – Tuesday, February 16 – The two candidates who receive the most votes during this primary election will move on to the general election.
  • Spring General – Tuesday, April 6 – The candidate who receives the most votes will be elected superintendent.
